Middle-Eastern Drumming Workshop

----

What:  A fun, informative workshop for beginning percussionists or for dancers looking to expand their knowledge of rhythm.

When:  Saturday, March 29th, beginning at 2:30 p.m..  The workshop and drumming/dancing circle will last from 2.5 - 3 hours.

Where: Family Learning Center in Menomonie, WI.  See directions on the Classes page.

Who:  This workshop is open to area belly dancers as well as any family and friends that are interested in drumming.

How:  Workshop cost is $30.00.  We have a very limited number of drums, which will be loaned out on a first-come, first-serve basis.  After that we’re asking that everyone bring their own drum.

Please pre-register by contacting Kenton Whitman at rwhitman@centurytel.net or 715-643-7201.  Class size is limited, so please reserve your spot soon!

----

Prompted by Eau Claire belly dance instructor Laura Gaber, Rhythm of the Storm duo Matt Tinberg and Kenton Whitman, and Rebecca Whitman of Sahaja Gypsy Tribe, are hosting a unique drumming workshop focusing on various rhythms, drumming technique, and exploring the mysterious realm of dancer/drummer communication. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of Middle-Eastern drumming, especially as it applies to belly dance.

Following the workshop we’ll have a dance/drum circle. A Little Bit Gypsy will also be there selling gypsy goods, so look forward to some fun shopping.  Feel free to bring food to share!

Although this is a drumming workshop (and non-belly dancers are welcome), it is designed especially for belly dancers who wish to enhance their dancing by gaining knowledge and skill with the drum.

If you are a dancer, understanding drumming will create a new clarity when you are dancing to live or recorded Middle-Eastern music.  As you recognize different rhythms and phrasing, both improvisational dance and choreographies will become easier to understand, and you’ll find more space within the music to creatively explore your dance!
